Mission and Beliefs

Core Beliefs

We believe that the Bible is God’s inspired word and reveals His truth for us.  It tells us that God exists as Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  God created all that exists and created people to live in a special relationship with Him.  Our first parents were given a place in God’s perfect creation but rebelled.  Since that time, sin separates us from God.  Because of His great grace and mercy God made a way for us to be rescued and restored through the work of His son, Jesus Christ.  Christ was God in human flesh.  As both God and man Christ was able to pay the price of our sin so that we can be in a right relationship with God again.  Christ sacrificed himself for us, died, and rose from the dead to intercede for us with God the Father.  We have also been given the gift of the Holy Spirit to guide and transform us in our new life in Christ and are promised eternity with God in a renewed, redeemed world.  The Bible not only reveals all this but continues as an authoritative guide in our new life in Christ.  Finally, we believe that the church is the community of God’s people where we encourage and support each other in our new lives of service.  Our aim is to glorify God through our worship and service and share his love with those who don’t yet know him.

Mission and Goals

Our Mission is “To glorify God by demonstrating HIS love to our church family and community”.  Our Vision is to achieve this Mission by emphasizing three specific commitments.  We are committed to:
1. Prayer
Providence is a family where prayer is a way of living and a vital part of all we do.  We believe prayer is an opportunity to communicate our praise, petitions, and thanksgivings to God.  Prayer is also how we express to God our desire to serve Him and follow His will in all we do as individuals and as a body of believers.  We are committed to learn how to pray and to grow by praying together.

2.  Care and Support of the Church Family
Providence is a family that demonstrates God’s love for each other in real and practical ways.  We do this by creating relationship building opportunities within the faith community where we are discipled and held accountable to serve the Lord and to be served by God’s people.  We intentionally meet each other’s physical, spiritual, educational, social and any other need with compassion and joy.

3.  Vibrant Ministry with the Community
Providence is a family that demonstrates God cares and we care about those in our community.  We utilize the opportunities God sets before us by coming together for discipleship, fellowship, worship and interaction on a regular basis.  Thus, we grow to be like Christ and everyone is welcomed, respected, valued and loved as equal recipients of God’s grace.

Denominational Affiliation

Providence Church is a member of the Christian Reformed denomination--a denomination of nearly 1000 churches in the United States and Canada.  We are Christian because we believe that Jesus Christ is our Savior and Lord, and our only means to a right relationship with God.  Our Reformed Theology reflects and highly values the themes recovered during the Protestant reformation.  It especially highlights the sovereignty of God and his grace through salvation for us.  Reformed distinctives have been summarized by three essential doctrines:

1. Sola Scriptura, (Scripture Alone): The Bible is inspired by God and is His inerrant Word.  It is the supreme and final authority for belief and practice.
2. Sola Gratia, (Grace Alone):  Sin affects us all.  We have salvation only through the grace and mercy of God, not through our own actions.
3. Sola Fide, (Faith Alone):  We are justified by our faith alone.  There is nothing that we can do to merit our own salvation except to have faith in Christ as Lord and Savior.

As a member church of the Christian Reformed Church of North America, (CRCNA) the Bible is our source of inspiration and worship.  The CRCNA is a creedal and confessional denomination in that we accept historical expressions (Apostle’s Creed, Nicene Creed, and Athanasian Creed) as summaries of the Christian faith. We also adhere to three confessional statements (Heidelberg Catechism, Belgic Confession, and Canons of Dort) that express our understanding of key biblical doctrines.

The Christian Reformed Church observes infant baptism and believes that adult believers and their children receive God’s covenant promise to be our God and Lord.  We also observe the Lord’s Supper regularly, welcoming members in good standing in other Christian churches to join us.  We believe strongly in growing in our faith, character and mission.
More information on the Christian Reformed Church in North American can be found at the denominational website, www.crcna.org .

The History of Providence Christian Reformed Church

Providence Christian Reformed Church was formed in 1977 when members of another local church, Covenant CRC, took the initiative to branch off and start a new church body.   Since then we have been served by eight ordained ministers including our two current pastors.  We have also been served by five seminary interns at times when we did not have a second ordained pastor.

The first part of our building, the current Fellowship Hall and some class rooms were built in 1978. In 1986 the current sanctuary and additional class rooms were built.  In 2000, the congregation approved a renovation of the sanctuary, which included air conditioning, a projection system and screen for worship.

A new Providence Church organizational structure was implemented in May 2005.  The new “staff model” is principle driven.  Jesus Christ is the head of the church and Council remains the ruling body of the church.

The staff model is based on the recognition that no one person has all the gifts to lead a church.  The new model positions and staffs the church for growth in numbers, programs, and quality.

Many of the staff positions are filled by part-time staff and some are filled by volunteers.
The different positions include: Pastor of Worship and Pastoral Care, Pastor of Outreach and Congregational Life, Director of Worship, Director of Music, Kids Hope Director, Director of Youth (High School), Director of YBCs (Middle School), Director of Discipleship for Youth, and Director of Discipleship for Adults

In 2010, a 21,700 square foot building addition was built.  We expanded our children's nursery and moved it up near the main entrance.  We also moved and consolidated our existing offices, which allowed us to increase the number of classrooms for ministry.  We added rooms focused on our youth; one is for Cadets (boys 4th to 8th grade), a second is for GEMS (girls 1st to 8th grade).  A third larger room is focused on activities like Sunday School large group sessions, Wednesday Night ministries, and Adult Education.  We also added an all purpose room / gym and a Youth Loft of 2,700 square feet.  This gym/all purpose room includes a large area for sports ministries, fellowship activities, and, in the future, dinners for our church and our community.  The Youth Loft provides Middle School and High School ages a space of their own for Bible study, music, and fellowship

Providence Christian Reformed Church is located in a suburban area with many neighborhoods and has been growing steadily in recent years.
